We receive a great deal of questions about best practices before, during, and after a cleanse. Below are TOMGIRL's feelings on the process. But remember, this is your cleanse; follow some advice, ignore some if it doesn't work in your schedule. It is all up to you and what your body requires - enjoy it!
The principle of cleansing is to initiate a form of departure from regular everyday tendencies – to change and pursue a physical transformation that can cleanse the body of toxins, excess food and sugar. At TOMGIRL Juice Co. we fervently believe our bodies to be powerful, self-healing organisms and when invited to rest from familiar habits our entire system will naturally tend toward a course of reinvention and invigoration.
A water fast all too rapidly strips the body of trace minerals and vitamins essential to endurance and physical energy. The TOMGIRL juice cleanse serves you 6, 16 oz pure organic fruit and vegetable juices to fill your life through the course of the day. Each juice provides the nutrients necessary to allow for a safe, energizing experience.
At TOMGIRL Juice Co., we even work with the weather and create a new seasonal and master cleanse for every season. Want something different? Tailored juice cleanses, tastings and consultation available. Moreover, if you see something on our Fresh Juice Delivery Menu and feel inspired to mix and match, please do! It's your gift to your body — make it colorful and have fun!
One week before your juice cleanse try to encourage the following into your daily schedule:
+ Wean yourself off caffeine, specifically coffee. Try to cut back to one cup per day of your favorite caffeinated beverage. Coffee is acidic and dehydrating - it conflicts with the benefits that the juice cleanse offers.
+ Cut back on alcohol consumption, drinking no more than two alcoholic beverages per week. Alcohol is also acidic and inhibits our ability to absorb nutrients by damaging intestinal villi.
+ Drink plenty of purified water, 70 fluid ounces or more a day. Drinking water helps us flush out toxins and clear our systems.
+ Try to reduce meat intake to 3-4 ounces per week, which is equivalent to a portion smaller than the palm of your hand. Meat is another highly acidic food source and leads to inflammation.
+ Reduce dairy, soy, and gluten intake. We are overloaded with these foods on a daily basis. Before the juice cleanse, try to eat a diversity of whole grains and starches - specifically vegetable-based to help prepare your system to a few days without these foods.
+ Avoid refined sugar and processed foods completely.
+ Enjoy lots of greens, vegetables, and fruits - Especially in their raw state. Try making an organic Almond Milk shake with fresh Pineapple, Kale, Celery, Parsley and Cucumber. Et Voila! Greens. Check!
+ Stock up on herbal teas and experiment!
+ Start EVERY morning with a tall glass of warm water with fresh lemon. About two tablespoons of juice per 8 oz.
+ Following your glass of lemon water, drink up to 32 oz of water while you get ready for the day.
+ Stretch! Every morning, every day. This acts to air out your lymph nodes and create space between your vertebrae and joints. Stretching is like giving yourself a big hug. Give yourself some love!
+ Engage in light forms of exercise. Try a beginner’s yoga class, a brisk walk, or a light jog. Fresh air and sunshine will only add to your body’s purification process.
+ Finally, let friends and family know that you are doing a juice cleanse. This is an opportunity to indulge in your well being, so don’t be afraid to be a little selfish and ask for their support. You are so incredibly worthy of feeling wonderful.
Can I eat during a juice cleanse?
It's up to you. And we do have a list of acceptable raw fruit and vegetable options — but we don't recommend it. The energy our body would typically use to digest food has now been assigned to your body's deeper cellular tissue, blood stream and internal organs. Take this juice cleanse as an opportunity for your body's natural healing process to go deeper and create the positive changes it is so powerfully able to perform with the help of raw fruit and vegetable enzymes.
Sleep is the true source of our physical and cognitive energy. We hope you are able to find the time to truly rest during your length of cleanse [and beyond]. 8-9 hours each night is ideal. Please indulge. Furthermore if you feel lower energy kick in during any point of your cleanse, this is your cue to stretch, step outside and or enjoy some fresh air. During pick up we can show you certain stretches that will help boost your body's circulation and ignite your mental and physical faculties.
During the Autumn and Winter seasons and even early Spring, we include two drinks in every cleanse that may be enjoyed at a comforting temperature. Imagine Cinnamon Toasted Almond Milk, Carrot Apple Ginger or Hawaiian Ginger Maple Lemonade. They are delightful when enjoyed warm. We also recommend you treat yourself daily to body brushing and a mineral salt bath. Furthermore, if you have access to or know of a spa with an Infrared Sauna — make an appointment. The benefits of all are bountiful.
What do I eat afterwards?
For some, a juice cleanse will inspire a transformation in what we want to put in our bodies after its completion. For others, the lack of solid foods can create cravings for the salty, sweet, acidic foods that we rid our systems of during a cleanse.
In anticipation of either experience, we invite you to prepare for the time period after your cleanse in a similar way to the week you prepared in advance.
Slowly introduce the foods that you love and enjoy back on to your plates, keeping in mind to only eat all highly-inflammatory foods in moderation. For example, we do not recommend celebrating your completion of the juice cleanse with a night of imbibing alcohol, as your system has become much more sensitive. The same consideration applies to meat, dairy, wheat, soy and coffee.
Start your first day off of pure juice with light foods, like a bowl of fresh fruits [mango, papaya and pineapple] sliced and drizzled with coconut milk, fresh lime, and cilantro for breakfast. Or simply prepare your favorite green smoothie. Try to retain the lesson of enjoying a glass of warm water with lemon and up to 32 ounces of spring or purified water before your first meal.
For lunch - a bountiful salad. Think arugula or baby spinach, piled high with avocado, sliced cucumber, shredded beet, carrot, and sprouts. Toss all your favorite ingredients together and dress with a healthy essential fatty acid oil [extra virgin olive oil, flax or hemp seed, coconut, or avocado]. Sprinkle with toasted sunflower seeds or a few raisins for an added treat.
Enjoy two snacks in between breakfast and dinner. Enjoy a juice! Or a piece of fruit with a handful of raw brazil nuts or sprouted almonds. Dip carrots and celery sticks into almond butter or crunch into a rice cake spread with avocado/hummus, Celtic sea salt, and sliced tomato. Try them all and alternate throughout the week.
Dinner is steamed vegetables and or a bowl of hot soup. Serve with whole grains such as quinoa or wild rice. Be light with salt and oil. Stick to organic products.
Repeat until you feel comfortable or simply — keep going!
What do I do afterwards?
Revel in the splendor of the wonderful gift you’ve given yourself! Continue to drink plenty of water. Use this as an opportunity for healthful choices and being kind to your beautiful self.
What is the timing of each drink during a juice cleanse?
Upon rising, before you even touch your toothbrush, begin your morning with a big glass of purified warm water with lemon. This simple drink is extremely alkalizing. Starting off your day with the juice of an entire lemon has extraordinary benefits. It helps boost your immune system, clear your skin, aids digestion, hydrates your lymph system [which is very important for detoxification], balances your pH, and more.
While you drink your big glass of lemon water [about 2 tablespoons lemon juice per 8 oz], put on a pot of hot water for tea. We like to start our mornings out slowly and doing things that make us happy, so it sets the tone for the rest of the day.
Pour yourself a glass of warm herbal tea. We recommend the following blends: Yerba Maté, Tulsi, Chamomile and Licorice Root, Chaga Mushroom, Dandelion Root, Ginger and Echinacea. Keep it unsweetened.
Now you’re ready for your first day of juice! Refer to the directions of your particular cleanse for the specific timing of each juice throughout the day.
Allow for two hours between each drink and enjoy as much water and warming teas throughout the day as you like. Stretch your entire body [head, shoulders, knees and toes] for 3, 5-10 minute intervals throughout the day. Sit in the sun and absolutely take a walk and stretch those hips and legs during breaks if you can. Remember to breathe deeply.
For added benefits and relaxation purposes, book a therapeutic massage or enjoy time in a steam room or an infra-red sauna. Dry brush your skin before the end of each day and soak in a mineral salt bath. Treat yourself to a movie or that amazing book you've been meaning to read. And lastly, allow 12-14 hours of uninterrupted digestion and detoxification between each day.
